Engaged at 20

Do you like surprises? I don’t like surprises… or I think I don’t? Either way, our engagement wasn’t a surprise to me! Yet still surprising! Now you may be thinking, “Neither was mine! Of course, we talked about marriage before he proposed!” Well, we did, too, but I knew the exact day and where he was proposing. Our lives were so hectic that it had to be planned so we could be there.

Somedays, I wish I had been more surprised, but we both loved it. It was quick, simple, and the best!

His parents, brother, and sister-in-love were there, so it was special. Although I knew it was happening on February 6th and it was happening at the Dallas Aquarium, I didn’t know where at the aquarium it was happening, so I was a little anxious the whole time! I could tell when it was about to happen, and I got really nervous. His dad stood between the people and us to block the way so people didn’t interrupt but also so people couldn’t see because we did NOT want any applause or attention!

I nervous laugh… what can I say? “Emily, take off your mask.” I can still hear these words before he proposed.

Thinking back, that would have been a bit cool but way more terrifying to be in the spotlight. It was such a sweet moment, and I’m so glad we got to do it in one of his favorite places, an aquarium, near one of my favorite things… a gorgeous window!

I thought the other day that I didn’t think we shared that we were engaged online. It is such a blur, honestly. I remember calling family and letting people know, but we never posted online. I did post a couple of stories on my socials with a wedding countdown. How funny to see those but no engagement posts, hahaha. But I LOVED the little bubble we were in. Blissful.

Maybe we didn’t share because of the backlash from family. Not on my husband’s side… it was just mine. His side was all excited and welcoming. That was challenging. I ended up sharing a story on my Instagram and Facebook about “60 days from being your wife,” and that’s about it, lol. I did, however, post when we got married. Mainly because others had already posted it… we aren’t really ones to care much about that type of stuff.

Little funny story about the picture above….. we technically weren’t engaged yet so I hadn’t gotten or seen the actual ring yet, but we needed to get some pictures done so we had something for our save the dates when the time came, so we went ahead with pictures. I had to look away with my eyes closed while the ring was placed on my finger. I then had to make sure not to look anywhere near my hand as people were saying how gorgeous it was …. torture, honestly!

All in all, I think the statement “When you know, you know” is very true. It was for us! Why wait? was our thinking, and there wasn’t a reason to.

What age were you when you got engaged? I would love to hear your thoughts in the comments!

Sincerely, Emily
